Yellow poop
Yellow often traces to food or a quick day. The version worth noticing is greasy, foul-smelling stool that floats, keeps happening, and hints that fat is not being absorbed.

Yellow Usually food
Why is my poop yellow?
- Usually
- Beta-carotene foods and turmeric, fast transit, or, when greasy and persistent, fat that was not absorbed.
- Common explanations
- Carrots & squash
- Turmeric
- Fast transit
- Fat not absorbed
- Check in with a clinician
- Greasy, floating, foul-smelling stool that keeps happening, or diarrhea that lasts more than a week.
Yellow poop often traces to food, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, squash or turmeric, or to a fast day when bile did not have time to turn brown. The version worth noticing is different: greasy, foul-smelling stool that floats, is hard to flush and keeps happening. That can mean fat is not being absorbed properly, and it is worth raising with a clinician.
See more than color: Stoolio reads color alongside your Bristol type and 12 visual readings, including consistency, size and fragmentation, and keeps a dated record, so a one-off yellow day and a pattern look different. Your first three scans are free.
Why can poop be yellow?
Yellow is already part of normal stool color. Cleveland Clinic notes that stool is usually a mix of brown, yellow and orange tones, with the yellow and orange coming from bile and bilirubin. When something speeds things up, strips out the brown or adds extra yellow, those tones take over.
Common explanations
- Beta-carotene foods and turmeric. Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash and other orange-yellow foods can make stool yellow, and so can yellow spices like turmeric and turmeric supplements.
- Fatty meals. Mayo Clinic lists fatty foods, such as deep-fried foods, among the dietary causes of yellow, greasy stool.
- A stomach bug. Diarrhea from an infection such as norovirus, rotavirus, Salmonella or E. coli can look yellow when the body has no time to absorb bile.
- Gallbladder removal. Cleveland Clinic notes that yellow diarrhea is normal after gallbladder surgery while the body readjusts to managing bile.
- Some antibiotics, which can tint stool yellow or green.
When yellow means fat is not being absorbed
The medical term is steatorrhea: stool that carries undigested fat. Cleveland Clinic describes it as looser, smellier and paler, bulky, greasy, foamy and floating, and hard to flush. Depending on the source, it is described as yellow or pale, which is why it appears on both this page and the pale stool page. Mayo Clinic links yellow, greasy, foul-smelling stool to malabsorption conditions such as celiac disease. Cleveland Clinic's list of causes also includes pancreatic problems (such as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and chronic pancreatitis), Crohn's disease, liver and bile duct conditions, and infections such as giardiasis, which the CDC describes as causing smelly, greasy poop that can float.
An occasional fatty poop after a very fatty meal is expected. The signal is seeing it consistently.
Foods that can turn poop yellow
Carrots, sweet potatoes, yams and squash, which are rich in beta-carotene; turmeric; and fried or very fatty foods. The same beta-carotene foods can also turn stool orange. A food-driven color should fade within a day or two once the food has passed.
When to check in with a clinician
- Greasy, foul-smelling, floating stool that keeps happening, with no obvious cause. Cleveland Clinic advises seeking medical attention for unexplained steatorrhea, while noting it is not an emergency in itself.
- Yellow diarrhea that lasts more than a week, or any persistent diarrhea (Cleveland Clinic).
- Stool that turns pale along with yellow skin or eyes and dark urine: contact a provider right away (Cleveland Clinic).
In breastfed babies, mustard-yellow, seedy, loose stool is completely normal. Pale yellow or chalky stool in a baby is a different matter; see the pale stool page.
What Stoolio looks at visually
Stoolio's Color Assessment reads six shades: pale, light brown, brown, dark brown, green and very dark. Yellow is not a separate shade on that scale, so for yellow the value of a scan is everything around the color: your Bristol type, consistency, size and fragmentation, logged with the date and any notes you add. That record is exactly what helps if you ever need to describe a recurring greasy, loose pattern to a clinician, and Stoolio can export it as a PDF or CSV summary. See the full poop color chart.
Frequently asked questions
Is yellow poop normal?
It can be. Carrots, sweet potatoes, turmeric, a fatty meal or a fast day can all make stool yellow. Greasy, foul-smelling, floating stool that keeps happening is the version worth raising with a clinician.
What does greasy yellow poop mean?
Greasy, bulky, foul-smelling stool that floats and is hard to flush can mean fat is not being absorbed, called steatorrhea. Causes include celiac disease, pancreatic problems and some infections. An occasional one after a fatty meal is expected; a pattern deserves a clinician's look.
Why is my diarrhea yellow?
When stool moves through fast, as with a stomach bug, there is less time for bile to change color, so diarrhea can look yellow. It is also common after gallbladder removal. Diarrhea lasting more than a week deserves a check-in.
Is yellow poop normal for babies?
Yes, mustard-yellow, seedy, loose stool is typical for breastfed babies. Pale yellow, gray or white stool in a baby is not, and needs a prompt call to the pediatrician.
